University of California--Riverside is a public institution. It is one of the 10 universities within the prestigious University of California system. The University of California opened its doors in 1869 with just 10 faculty members and 38 students. Today, the UC system includes more than 233,000 students and more than 190, 000.Widely recognized as one of the most ethnically diverse research universities in the nation faculty and staff, with more than 1.7 million alumni living and working around the world, the campus is in the midst of a tremendous growth spurt with new and remodeled facilities coming on-line on a regular basis.
















Location & Facilities

University of California is Approximately 50 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. UCR is also within easy driving distance of dozens of major cultural and recreational sites, as well as desert, mountain and coastal destinations. The original buildings that formed the earliest kernel of the campus included the UC Citrus Experiment Station, residential buildings, and barn, all of which are still in use. They were designed by Lester H. Hibbard, in association with H.B. Cody. Built by 1917 at a cost of $165,000, the architecture of the major buildings followed the Mission Revival style suggesting the Spanish colonial heritage of Southern California. Library With two million volumes, 28,000 print and electronic serial subscriptions, 1.7 million microforms, 300,000 government information sources and access to 165,000 e-books. Three spaces - the Barbara and Art Culver Center of the Arts, the California Museum of Photography and the Sweeney Art Gallery - form UCR ARTS block; a regional performing and visual arts center.
