Overview

Sacred Heart was founded in 1963 by the Most Reverend Walter W. Curtis, Bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport, Connecticut. It was the first Catholic university in the United States to be staffed by the laity. Dr. John J. Petillo is the current President of the University.SHU is the second largest Catholic university in New England, behind Boston College. SHU is a dynamic University known for its commitment to academic excellence, student involvement, championship Division I athletic teams, cutting-edge technology and community service. Popular, newly launched programs include master's degrees in digital marketing and human resource management. Plans to launch new programs include a master's degree in speech-language pathology in 2014 with an undergraduate minor and post-baccalaureate pre-professional plan of study starting in fall 2013.

The University's commitment to experiential learning incorporates concrete, real-life study for students in all majors. Drawing on the rich resources in New England and New York City, students are connected with research and internship opportunities ranging from co-ops at international advertising agencies to research with faculty on marine life in the Long Island Sound. These opportunities help pave the way for a 93 percent placement rate for graduating seniors in full-time jobs and/or graduate study. SHU's experiential learning opportunities are complemented by a rich student life program offering more than 85 student organizations, including comprehensive music programs, media clubs and academic honor societies. The University's strong performing arts program includes the theatre arts program, several choirs and band programs, including marching band, pep band, concert band among other ensembles, as well as an academic minor in performing arts. Consistent with its mission, Sacred Heart is nationally recognized for contributing over 53,000 service hours last year. With more than 6,300 total undergraduate, master and doctoral students enrolled in more than 50 programs of study, Sacred Heart University is truly an innovative community committed to providing transformative opportunities. Sacred Heart is included in The Princeton Review's Best 371 Colleges 2010, the Best 301 Business Schools 2010, as well as U.S. News and World Report's Best Colleges.
