The institution was established in 1964 by Arthur D. Little Inc. as the Management Education Institute, where business executives from developing countries could be trained. Formerly known as the Arthur D. Little School of Management, Hult International Business School has a cluster of five, sprawling campuses. In 2012, it graduated 2,000 students from its MBA, Executive MBA, Master and Bachelor degree programs.

Hult is ranked 31st in the world and 21st in the U.S. by The Economist and 57th by The Financial Times. The Economist has also ranked it 1st in Percentage Increase in Salary, while the Financial Times recently counted it amongst the top 10 schools for international business, international experience, and international mobility. Hult International Business School is the lead sponsor of the Hult Prize (formerly Hult Global Case Challenge), an annual international case competition launched in 2010 that asks students to find solutions to global social challenges.

Situated on the San Francisco waterfront at the foot of Telegraph Hill, Hult's campus lies opposite the headquarters of world-famous retailer Levi Strauss & Co, encompassing a stimulating, modern and convenient learning hub. Hult's Boston campus is located within two miles of the city center, Harvard Business School, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and several other historic landmarks and museums. Hult's MBA in Boston is also enhanced by its close proximity to several of America's leading healthcare, technology, consulting, insurance, and financial services companies.
