Emporia State University is a centrally located, comprehensive, and student-centered institution whose central mission is to develop lifelong learning skills, impart society's cultural heritage, educate, and prepare students for professional careers and advanced study. Faculty, staff, and students interact in an atmosphere of freedom of inquiry and expression. Educational opportunities are found in majors in art and sciences, business, education, and library and information management. During 2012-2013, over 750 online courses were delivered, including two complete undergraduate program, eight complete graduate programs, two certificate programs, and four teaching endorsement programs.

Emporia State University consists of 240 full time teaching faculties; highly qualified in their respective fields. Eighty-two percent of these faculty members have terminal degrees and all have considerable teaching experience. The faculty is organized into 21 teaching areas which are grouped into four major colleges/schools, i.e., the School of Business; the Teachers College; the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the School of Library and Information Management.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in numerous fields, with an emphasis on health professions and related programs, biological and biomedical sciences, and social sciences.

The School of Library and Information Management (SLIM) is accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) and consists of the Master of Library Science, which can be acquired at the Emporia campus or one of its satellite locations: Kansas City, Denver, Colorado, Salt Lake City, Utah, Orem, Utah, Portland, Oregon, and Atlanta, Georgia.
Teachers College
Emporia State University's Teachers College is one of only four post-secondary institutions in the nation to be identified as an Exemplary Model Teacher Education program by Arthur Levine in his 2006 national study of teacher education programs. The other three were Alverno College, Stanford University, and University of Virginia.
