University of Canterbury

The University of Canterbury had three founding Professors: Charles Cook, Mathematics, St John's College, Cambridge; Alexander Bicker ton, Chemistry and Physics, School of Mining, London; and John Macmillan Brown, Balliol College, Oxford. Founded in 1873, it is New Zealand's second-oldest university. The University of Canterbury enjoys an international reputation as a university that has a distinguished heritage, embraces and extols traditional values of academic excellence and takes singular pride in its strong research culture.

The University is located in attractively landscaped grounds in the suburb of Ilam, in Christchurch, the largest city in NZ's South Island, with regular direct flights to Asia. The city is close to the sea, with the mountains just an hour's drive away. There are five ski-fields within an hour and a half's drive from the city. Christchurch is also known as the garden city and is the silicon plains of New Zealand. There are over hundred large and small IT companies located in the city including the Tate and Jade electronics. Christchurch has a temperate climate with the full range of spectacular seasons. From hot, summers to crisp winter days with clear blue skies, to mild autumn and spring seasons.

The University has 5 Colleges: Arts, Business, Engineering, Science, Education, and a School of Law. There are 28 departments located within theses Colleges offering 159 different majors at Bachelor's Masters and PhD level. Some of the programmes that are popular with Indian students are:

There are two intakes. The main intake is in mid- February; all courses can be started in February of each year. However, there are many courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate level that can be started in mid year - mid-July. In order to find out if a course can be started in July.
